Semieta Access Control – Case Study

Effectively managing access for over 7500 people

To help with security and controlling access to its facilities, Aylesbury College installed latest technology following a multi-million pond refurbishment. Linked with the student database, the college has tools to provide a safe and secure learning environment for students and effectively manage unapproved visits.

Background

Aylesbury Logo Aylesbury college is one of the largest colleges in the Aylesbury Vale area with over 7,500 full-time students. The College underwent a large scale refurbishment in 2006/7 costing £37 million. As part of the refurbishment, the Collegedecided to investigate the use of a student control system to help with security.

Challenge

During its investigation, Aylesbury college recognised the potential health & safety, security as well as financial benefits that a control system could bring. With thousands of students on its site, it was difficult to ensure that only approved students were entering the premises and using the facilities.

Solution

Working closely with the College, Access IT Data supplied its Samieta Access Control software and developed an import utility that transferred information records from the College’s central database of students and also applied rules where necessary to translate information for formatting on to access passes. Four half-height turnstiles, providing eight entry points, were installed in the main entrance of the College for students and staff to ’swipe’ their passes before gaining access or exit.

All approved visits are through the turnstiles. This ensures that anybody else coming to the site has to report to the reception desk before being allowed on to the siteand reduces the need for security staff to check passes.

In an emergency, the turnstiles automatically spin to allow easy exiting. The solution has a facility to stop students attempting to ‘fool’ the system by handing their passes back to another person to use to enter. With student details printed on the pass, it is also used as an identification card on the premises.

By linking the system to a student database, unapproved students – with unpaid fees, for example – are automatically blocked from entry. This facility has resulted in the system paying for itself in less than a year as defaulting students are more clearly identified and fees are more esily collected. Additionally, eliminating unauthorised access has reduced crime at the College. There have been zero thefts and zero criminal incidents since launching Semieta access Control.
